Millions of women remain unbanked in Nigeria

Some 32 million women in Nigeria remain unbanked.

What’s more, most of these women live in the north of the country and some 15% of all adult women in Nigeria have to rely on social capital to meet their financial needs.

The figures ceom from the Latest Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFINA) report which focused on “Women Economic Empowerment” and derived from the 2020 Access to Finance assessment.

The report revealed that:

  • 4.2 million women are saving at home;
  • 3.6 million women are remitting through family and friends;
  • 7 millionwomen are borrowing from family and friends;
  • 2.4 million are interested in micro-insurance;
  • 4.7 million women are interested in mobile money.
